Welsh Cup 2Q Review:

While Rhostyllen were striking another blow for the little North East Wales League in our featured match (see BLOG page), the other survivors from that league Sychdyn lost out at Prestatyn Sports. The only other team progressing to the First Round Proper from the lowest tier of Welsh football is CPD Aberffraw, from Anglesey, who profited from a reversed tie against Llanrwst to score a surprise 2-1 win at home.

The Wrexham /North East Wales region brought some other notable results in this round: Cefn Albion edging a five goal affair with Anglesey visitors Llanerch-y-Medd, while one of the region's bigger clubs, Penycae (not so long ago a Cymru Alliance outfit) crashed 2-5 at home to Penmaenmawr Phoenix. In a local derby, five-time cup winners Chirk AAA (last win: 1894) progressed to the competition proper with a narrow 0-1 win at Llangollen.
The other north Wales ties produced plenty of goals, with Gwalchmai and Greenfield fighting out a high scoring match on Anglesey, Gwalchmai winning 5-3, and also on the island Trearddur Bay scoring eight against neighbours Amlwch. FC Nomads of Connah's Quay almost matched that, with a 7-1 win over Mochdre Sports.

In South Wales, the headline result has to be AFC Butetown's 5-0 win over Welsh League Chepstow; though this was flagged in advance as a potential shock, it was the margin of the South Wales Alliance leaders' win that surprised. Former cup finalists and European Cup entrants Cwmbran Town, now operating in the Gwent County League, had another big win over Welsh League opponents, 7-3 against Penrhiwceiber Rangers, and there were other Welsh League casualties against lower league sides as Cwmbach Royal Stars beat Newport Civil Service and Brecon Corries won away to Cwm Welfare. Caldicot Town avoided a similar fate to neighbours Chepstow by surviving a real battle away to Penlan in Swansea. Not for the first time in national competition, the Swansea side saw their chances spoiled by player dismissals, losing in extra time with eight players left on the field.
