Undy downed

SATURDAY 11th NOVEMBER The Causeway, damp and overcast.
UNDY ATHLETIC 1 LLANELLI TOWN 2 (Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division One)

Wet overnight weather casts doubt on this Saturday's fixtures, but a mid-morning assurance from Undy that their pitch isn't (yet) waterlogged is enough for me. I set off for the Gwent levels, not that far but not the easiest journey either, as Undy is served by just one bus an hour from Newport. Train times are more convenient, so I travel to Severn Tunnel Junction, having completely forgotten that it's a two mile walk without footpaths. I pay the price for forgetfulness, constantly having to step onto the sodden grass verge to avoid traffic.

Undy's Causeway ground is a work in progress at present. Six foot mesh fence units block off most of the pitch perimeter rail, and on the car park side there's a building site, where the base of a new seated stand is in place. None of this is a problem to me, as I've come partly to see how (or rather if) work towards Tier 2 criteria is progressing and partly to watch promotion favourites Llanelli Town for the first time this season. With a reasonable turn out of visiting fans, the work does mean that unobscured views of the pitch are in short supply. I just hope the rain holds off.

A Dr Jekyll Night for Barry

TUESDAY 14th MARCH: Jenner Park - mild and misty
BARRY TOWN UNITED 2 HAVERFORDWEST COUNTY 0 (Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Div 1)
A misty, murky spring evening in Barry, but potentially a night of season-defining proportions for the Jenner Park club. On arrival at the ground, there's a sort of nervous tension pervading all pre-match conversations - "can't afford to lose", "must win", "six-pointer" etc.

And of course the tension is magnified by Barry's inconsistent, Jekyll and Hyde form in the league. You really wouldn't want have a significant wager riding on them - and it's this that differentiates the Welsh League title race from the other top leagues - TNS running away with the Welsh Premier, Prestatyn likewise in the Cymru Alliance, and both already crowned. Those are the sort of bets you'd have wanted to be on - short priced favourites, preferably selected under a Free Bet offer to maximise the return. Given such an opportunity now, I'd go for TNS to complete the treble, and steer clear of the trappy, unpredictable Welsh League.

Actually, ahead of this game it is Haverfordwest who have been talked up as the form team, with the momentum since the turn of the year, and maybe poised to sweep past Barry. To add to the intrigue and interest, there's the matter of revenge for that 7-1 battering the Bluebirds received here in the WPL Cup a few months back, plus the 'will they, won't they' saga of their attitude to promotion to the Welsh Premier.

Llandarcy: all change

SATURDAY 17th DECEMBER - Llandarcy Academy of Sport - dry, overcast, mild
YNYSYGERWN 0 CHEPSTOW TOWN 1 (Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Div 3)
When Ynysygerwn won the west wales play-off and joined the Welsh League, I resolved to re-visit Llandarcy this season. It's taken longer to fit it in than expected, but that's possibly a good thing, as their form has improved recently.

It's a familiar ground, a fairly familiar journey, but on the other hand I haven't been to Llandarcy for years. It must have been in 2007-08 that I last visited. That was the last season that Neath AFC played here, before they moved to the Gnoll. By 2012 they had folded.

Of course, before Neath AFC's spell at Llandarcy Park (2005-2008), their predecessor clubs had other grounds nearby, notably BP Llandarcy's original ground. It's very hard to place exactly where that ground was these days, because the area has been so totally rebuilt. Even since my last visit eight or nine years ago, the main junction where it stood is barely recognisable - a huge dual carriageway now cuts through. As far as I can tell - and without referring to old maps - the site of the old ground is roughly where a Holiday Inn now sits.

Just down the road, the football ground at Llandarcy Park is not greatly changed, but its surroundings are. Most strikingly, the huge and grandiosely named Academy of Sport building dominates the south-west side of the ground, while behind the pavilion and changing room end a large modern housing development now looms on the hillside, threatening the tranquillity of Llandarcy village conservation area round the next bend.

The ground is still entered on either side of the pavilion. A wrought iron sign over the turnstile still displays the name Neath AFC. The pavilion itself - Neath's clubhouse - is now a proper café bar for the campus, with smart decking overlooking the corner of the pitch. The steps and bushy slope at this end - which add character - are still in place. On the left hand side, the old cricket scoreboard structure sits rotting away, to the side of the stand - which clearly lost its seating some time ago. On the opposite side, which used to be the cricket square, there is now a mesh fence and no spectator access at all. Even with just the three sides, it's still a fine Welsh League ground, and the playing surface must be one of the best grass pitches at this level. So it's an excellent facility for a little village club like Ynysygerwn to be using.

Unbelievable PTT

SATURDAY 17th SEPTEMBER. Lakeside Sports Academy, sunny.
CAMBRIAN & CLYDACH BGC 2 PORT TALBOT TOWN 2 (Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division 1)

With the main railway lines east and west out of Cardiff closed by engineering works, it's a weekend for staying local; and for avoiding the centre of Cardiff itself, which has become "City of the Unexpected" for two days, with big crowds expected to celebrate Roald Dahl's centenary. The only sensible option is to head up the valleys today.Fortunately, Tonypandy in the Rhondda presents itself as the answer: Cambrian v Port Talbot Town in the Welsh League is interesting enough, but just next door there's a delayed FAW Trophy game too. And it's there that I head first on arriving in Tonypandy, a.k.a Mid Rhondda. On the old King George's Field ground, where Cambrian themselves started out, Tonypandy Albion of the Rhondda League are meeting RTB Ebbw Vale in a 2pm kick-off, so I can watch the first 20 minutes here before going up to Cambrian's 'new' field.
